Understanding Aspect Ratios

  • Ratio: The relationship between width and height, expressed as X:Y.
  • GCD: The simplified ratio uses the Greatest Common Divisor (1920:1080 → 16:9).
  • Preservation: Locking the ratio prevents distortion when resizing.
  • Letterboxing: Black bars added when source ratio differs from destination.

Calculation Formulas

Ratio: Width ÷ Height = decimal ratio (e.g., 1920÷1080 = 1.78)
